Landfill Types and Liner Systems

چکیده

Introduction Modern landfills are highly engineered containment systems, designed to minimize the impact of solid waste (refuse, trash, and garbage) on the environment and human health. In modern landfills, the waste is contained by a liner system. The primary purpose of the liner system is to isolate the landfill contents from the environment and, therefore, to protect the soil and ground water from pollution originating in the landfill. The greatest threat to ground water posed by modern landfills is leachate. Leachate consists of water and watersoluble compounds in the refuse that accumulate as water moves through the landfill. This water may be from rainfall or from the waste itself. Leachate may migrate from the landfill and contaminate soil and ground water, thus presenting a risk to human and environmental health. Landfill liners are designed and constructed to create a barrier between the waste and the environment and to drain the leachate to collection and treatment facilities. This is done to prevent the uncontrolled release of leachate into the environment. Society produces many different solid wastes that pose different threats to the environment and to community health. Different disposal sites are available for these different types of waste. The potential threat posed by the waste determines the type of liner system required for each type of landfill. Liners may be described as single (also referred to as simple), composite, or double liners.

Leakage Performance of the GM + CCL Liner System for the MSW Landfill

The contaminants in the landfill leachate press pose a grave threat to environment of the soil and the groundwater beneath the landfill. Despite there being strict requirements in relevant provisions of both domestic and foreign countries for the design of the bottom liner system. Pollution of the soil and the groundwater still took place in a number of landfills because of the leakage. To inve...

Comparison Of Hydraulic Conductivity Test Methods for Landfill Clay Liners

Accurately measuring the in situ hydraulic conductivity (permeability) of a clay liner is a major factor in the construction of landfill containment systems. Laboratory and large-scale field test methods are often utilized on test pads constructed prior to placement of the production liner to determine the hydraulic conductivity of the clay. While these test methods provide reliable results, th...

Statistical Analysis of Leachate Characteristics in Pilot Scale Landfill Lysimeter

The objective of this study was to analyze the characteristics of leachate in pilot scale landfill lysimeter for inorganic and organic compounds as well as metal and heavy metal concentrations against their operational conditions based on statistical tool through statistical package for social science (SPSS) software. To these attempts, three pilot scale landfill lysimeter test facilities were ...

Formulation of Sub-Pollution Indices and Evaluation of Leachate Pollution Index of Pilot Scale Landfill Lysimeter

(Received: July 21, 2012; Accepted in Revised Form: July 5, 2013) Abstract: The principal concern of this study is to formulate the sub-pollution indices (sub-LPIs) and evaluate the individual and overall leachate pollutant index (LPI) of pilot scale landfill lysimeter at KUET campus, Bangladesh. To these endeavors, leachate samples from collection chamber of landfill lysimeter were sampling an...

Appropriate Use of MSW Leachate Recycling in Municipal Solid Waste Landfilling1

There is considerable interest today in the so-called “biocell” approach toward municipal solid waste (MSW) landfilling in which leachate is introduced back into the landfill. This approach reduces the cost of leachate management and is said to reduce/eliminate the potential for long term landfill gas production and groundwater pollution. However, a critical review of the typical approach being...
